When a perfume is described as having notes of jasmine, don't you assume it has actual jasmine? Or do you assume it has an inexpensive lab-made chemical that mimics jasmine? The sad fact is, most mainstream perfumes practice this form of deception in marketing. Their list of ingredients need only say "Fragrance" or "Parfum" rather than list all the actual ingredients. This of course, is to protect trade secrets and keep the costs down for mass production and to pay for the glossy marketing and packaging.
Well, it is no wonder big brands would rather not reveal the "real" trade secret which is that the majority of mainstream perfume is made from lab made synthetics. It is far less romantic to think the expensive, fancy bottle of that popular designer perfume is made from the very same chemicals used to make laundry detergents or dish soap.
Most mainstream perfumes get their "notes" as well as their strength and longevity from powerful lab created chemicals often made from petrochemicals, and used in industrial products for odor masking and staying power. This expectation of perfumes to be aggressive, powerful and long lasting is a direct result of the use of so many synthetics and how we have become accustomed to them since childhood. Extracts of petals or leaves and natural resins and distillates are far too costly and subtle and simply do not turn a profit for large perfume brands.
Synthetics smell great, there is no question about that, and they have been incredibly useful to the success of so many products and prosperity for companies who utilize them. But in the context of fine perfumery, once you realize how misleading the marketing strategies are, if you are an appreciator of authenticity and genuine things it may give you pause to wonder what you may be missing.
Many of us have never smelled the real flowers mentioned as notes in the fragrances we have worn for years! It is like having a beautiful silk arrangement of flowers, without ever having touched the silky, fleshy petal of a real rose. Luckily there is a growing trend for niche perfumers to create fragrances the way they were in the "old days" before synthetics revolutionized the industry.
As the founder of Wildflower Perfumes, I believe that if a perfume mentions notes of jasmine or rose or orange blossom, it should have those real materials in the product, unless otherwise stated. In my perfumes, you can be assured that when it says "rose", you are getting the real thing. Of course it costs much, much more to make and the bottles are not as fancy, but the real beauty lies in what matters most...the actual perfume. To me, honesty is the most beautiful ingredient so I humbly offer you my perfumes as a tribute to the beautiful scented gifts of nature, and to the virtue of honesty.
Thank you for visiting Wildflower Botanical Perfume
